What is a financial health check?

A financial health check is a quick look at whether your money is working for you or against you each month. Instead of tracking every purchase, it looks at four numbers most people already know: what you take home, what you spend, what you pay toward debt, and what you have saved.

The result is your Financial Health Score: a single number that shows where you stand today, and which area is pulling it down the most. It's built for people living paycheck to paycheck who want a clear starting point, not a lecture.

The four questions

1. Monthly take-home income

What actually reaches your bank account after taxes and deductions, not your salary.

2. Monthly spending

Rent, bills, groceries, gas and everything else you spend in a typical month, not counting debt payments.

3. Monthly debt payments

What you pay each month toward credit cards, car loans, student loans and other debts.

4. Total savings

Money you could reach in an emergency, like a savings or checking cushion.

How the Financial Health Score is calculated

Your score is the average of four areas. Each area is scored from 0 to 100, so you can see exactly what's helping and what's holding you back.

Savings Protection

How many months of spending and debt payments your savings could cover. Three months earns full marks.

Debt Health

How much of your take-home pay goes to debt payments. The smaller that share, the higher this area scores.

Cash Flow

How much is left after spending and debt payments each month. More breathing room means a higher score.

Growth Activity

Whether you have room to build savings or reach goals, based on your monthly breathing room and your savings cushion together.

What your score means

ScoreLevelWhat it usually means
85–100ExcellentStrong cushion, manageable debt and real room to grow.
70–84GoodSolid footing with one or two areas to strengthen.
55–69FairGetting by, but one area is creating pressure.
40–54Needs WorkMoney is tight; one focused change can help most.
0–39At RiskSpending and debt are outpacing income or savings. Start with the basics.

Example: how one score comes together

Example only

Someone takes home $4,500 a month, spends $2,700, pays $450 toward debt and has $6,000 saved.

  • Savings Protection: 63 (savings cover about 1.9 months)
  • Debt Health: 78 (10% of take-home pay goes to debt)
  • Cash Flow: 66 ($1,350 left over each month)
  • Growth Activity: 43

Financial Health Score: 63 (Fair). The lowest area is Growth Activity, so the next step is putting part of that $1,350 toward savings on purpose each month, so the cushion keeps growing.

Example only. Your score comes from your own numbers.

Common questions

Is the financial health check really free?

Yes. The check, your score and your next step are free. There's no bank connection and no account needed to see your result.

Is this the same as my credit score?

No. A credit score shows lenders how you've handled credit. Your Financial Health Score looks at your monthly cash flow, debt payments and savings to show how your money is working for you right now. Checking it has no effect on your credit.

Do I need exact numbers?

No. Close estimates work. You can update your numbers anytime and your score updates with them.

Is my information safe?

Your numbers are saved in your own browser. They're only sent to our servers if you sign in to sync your progress across devices, or when you ask Veto, our AI coach, a question about them.

What should I do after I get my score?

Start with the one area that's lowest. NextMoveAI points you to a clear next step and the right free tool, like the Debt Planner for payoff plans or the Spending page for finding room in your budget.

How often should I check my financial health?

Once a month is a good rhythm, or anytime your income, bills or debts change. Watching the number move is a simple way to see your progress.
